It’s the quickest way to leave a fair tip at a restaurant, bar, salon or for a delivery, and to divide the check evenly among friends.

How to use the tip calculator

  1. Enter the bill amount. The pre-tip total from your check.
  2. Choose a tip percentage. Tap a preset (15%, 18%, 20%, 25%) or type your own.
  3. Set the number of people (optional). Splitting the bill divides everything evenly.
  4. Read your result. The tip, total and per-person amounts update instantly.

How to calculate a tip

To calculate a tip, multiply the bill by the tip percentage as a decimal, then add it to the bill:

Tip = Bill × (Tip % ÷ 100)   ·   Total = Bill + Tip

For example, on a $50 bill with a 20% tip: $50 × 0.20 = $10 tip, for a $60 total. To split it between four people, divide the $60 total by 4 — that’s $15 each.

How much should you tip?

Tipping customs vary by country and service, but in the United States these ranges are common:

Service Typical tip
Restaurant (sit-down) 15–20%
Exceptional service 25%+
Food delivery 10–15%
Bartender $1–2 per drink or 15–20%
Taxi / rideshare 10–15%
Hairdresser / barber 15–20%

Quick reference for common bills and tip rates (tip only, before splitting):

Bill 15% 18% 20%
$25 $3.75 $4.50 $5.00
$50 $7.50 $9.00 $10.00
$75 $11.25 $13.50 $15.00
$100 $15.00 $18.00 $20.00

Should you tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total?

Most etiquette experts say it’s fine to tip on the pre-tax bill, since the tax isn’t part of the service. Tipping on the post-tax total is also common and simply means a slightly more generous tip. Either is acceptable.

Gratuity Another word for a tip — money given for good service.
Service charge A mandatory fee some venues add automatically, often for large groups.

Tip Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate a tip?

Multiply your bill by the tip percentage as a decimal, then add it to the bill. For a $50 bill at 20%, the tip is $50 × 0.20 = $10, making the total $60. To split it, divide the total by the number of people.

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

In the United States, 15–20% is standard for sit-down restaurant service, with 25% or more for exceptional service. Tipping customs vary by country, so check local norms when travelling.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total?

Tipping on the pre-tax bill is perfectly acceptable, since tax isn't part of the service. Tipping on the post-tax total is also common and simply results in a slightly larger tip.

How do I split a bill with a tip between friends?

Add the tip to the bill to get the total, then divide that total by the number of people. This calculator does it automatically — just enter how many people are splitting the bill.

What is a good tip for food delivery?

A common range for food delivery is 10–15% of the order, or a minimum of a few dollars for small orders, with more for bad weather or large or distant deliveries.

Do I still tip if there's a service charge?

If a service charge or automatic gratuity has already been added to your bill — common for large groups — an additional tip is optional. Always check the bill before tipping again.

Is the tip calculator free to use?

Yes, this tip calculator is completely free, needs no sign-up, and gives instant results directly in your browser.
