What this GST / VAT calculator does
A GST / VAT calculator works out the tax on a price both ways. In Add tax mode it adds GST or VAT to a net price; in Remove tax mode it extracts the tax from a tax-inclusive price to reveal the base amount. Either way it shows the net price, tax amount and gross total.
How to calculate GST or VAT
Tax = Net price × (Rate ÷ 100) · Gross = Net + Tax
At a 20% VAT rate, a $100 net price gets $20 of tax, for a $120 gross. To work backward from a tax-inclusive $120, divide by 1.20 to get the $100 net price — useful because GST/VAT prices are often shown inclusive.

GST vs VAT
GST (Goods and Services Tax) and VAT (Value Added Tax) are both consumption taxes added at each stage of supply and ultimately paid by the consumer. The names and rates differ by country — for example GST in India, Australia and Canada, and VAT across the UK and EU — but the math this calculator uses is the same.

GST / VAT Calculator FAQ
How do I add GST or VAT to a price?
Multiply the net price by the rate as a decimal, then add it. At 20% VAT, a $100 net price gets $20 of tax, for a $120 gross total.
How do I remove GST or VAT from a price?
Divide the tax-inclusive price by (1 + rate ÷ 100). A $120 price including 20% VAT divided by 1.20 gives a $100 net price, so the VAT was $20. Use the "Remove tax" mode to do this automatically.
What's the difference between GST and VAT?
Both are consumption taxes added through the supply chain and paid by the end consumer. The name and rate differ by country — GST in places like India, Australia and Canada; VAT in the UK and EU — but the calculation is identical.
Are GST/VAT prices usually inclusive or exclusive?
In many VAT/GST countries, consumer prices are shown tax-inclusive, so the tax is already in the displayed price. The "Remove tax" mode helps you find the net amount behind an inclusive price.
What rate should I use?
Use your country's standard rate (for example 20% in the UK, 10% in Australia) or the specific rate for your product category, since many systems have reduced or zero rates for certain goods.
Is the GST / VAT calculator free to use?
Yes, this GST / VAT calculator is completely free, needs no sign-up, and gives instant results directly in your browser.
