How much fiber do you need? This free fiber intake calculator shows your recommended daily fiber by age and sex, and compares it to your current intake so you can see the gap.
General guidance for healthy people. Increase fiber gradually and drink plenty of water. People with certain gut conditions may need different advice — check with a doctor or dietitian.
How the Fiber Intake Calculator Works
This calculator looks up your recommended daily fiber target by sex and age group, then compares it against the amount of fiber you’re currently eating so you can see how big the gap is.
Formula: Target is looked up from a reference table by sex and age group. Then: % of Target = round(Current Intake ÷ Target × 100), and Gap to Target = max(Target − Current Intake, 0) grams — shown as “Target met” once the gap reaches zero.
- Sex — male or female; affects the fiber target for age groups 9 years and up.
- Age group — one of six bands (1-3, 4-8, 9-13, 14-18, 19-50, or 51+ years) used to select the target from the reference table.
- Current fiber today (optional) — grams of fiber you estimate you’re already eating, used to calculate your percent of target and remaining gap.

| Male | 9-13 | 15 g | 31 g | 16 g |
| Female | 51+ | 25 g | 21 g | Target met |
| Male | 14-18 | 10 g | 38 g | 28 g |

Fiber Intake Calculator FAQ
How much fiber should I eat per day?
It depends on your sex and age. Reference targets in this tool range from 19 g/day for young children up to 38 g/day for teen and adult men, with women’s targets generally 5-13 g lower in the same age bands. Enter your details to see your specific target. Why do men need more fiber than women?
Fiber targets are commonly set relative to calorie intake (about 14 g per 1,000 kcal), and men’s higher average calorie needs push their reference target higher in the same age group. It reflects typical calorie patterns, not a fixed rule for every individual. What happens if I already eat more fiber than my target?
The gap to target won’t go negative — once your current intake meets or exceeds the target, the calculator shows “Target met” rather than a negative number. Is 18 grams of fiber a day enough?
For most teens and adults, reference targets run from 21 g to 38 g/day depending on sex and age, so 18 g falls short for nearly every adult group. Check your specific age and sex band in the tool to see the exact shortfall.Should I increase my fiber intake quickly?
No — a sudden jump in fiber can cause bloating or discomfort. It’s generally better to raise intake gradually over days or weeks and drink plenty of water alongside it.Does this calculator account for digestive conditions like IBS?
No, it only reflects general reference targets for healthy people. If you have a digestive condition such as IBS or IBD, fiber needs and tolerance can differ significantly, so it’s worth checking with a doctor or dietitian.Related Calculators
