Brick Quantity Calculator

Work out how many bricks to buy. This free brick quantity calculator turns wall size and brick dimensions into a brick count, including the mortar joint, single or double skin, and waste.

Enter the wall size (or area) and brick dimensions. The mortar joint is added to each brick’s face — 10 mm is typical. Use double skin for a two-brick-thick wall.

Mortar (approx)

Bricks needed = wall area ÷ (brick face + joint), times the number of skins, plus waste. A UK single-skin wall works out to about 60 bricks per square metre. Mortar is a rough allowance — about 0.02–0.03 m³ per m² of single-skin wall.

Use this free brick quantity calculator to work out how many bricks you need. Enter your wall size and brick dimensions to get the brick count, with mortar joint and waste included.

What this brick calculator does

brick quantity calculator divides your wall area by the brick face plus its mortar joint, multiplies by the number of skins, and adds a waste allowance for cuts and breakages.

How many bricks you need

bricks/m² = 1 ÷ ((brick L + joint) × (brick H + joint))
bricks = wall area × bricks/m² × skins × (1 + waste %)

A standard UK single-skin wall works out to about 60 bricks per square metre, so a 24 m² wall needs roughly 1,500 bricks with waste.

Bricks per square metre

Wall Bricks / m²
UK single skin (215 × 65, 10 mm joint) ~60
UK double skin ~120
US modular (194 × 57) ~73

Don’t forget the mortar joint

Bricks are laid with a mortar joint (usually 10 mm) around each one, so the effective size is bigger than the brick alone. Leaving the joint out overestimates how many bricks fit — this calculator includes it.

How to use the brick calculator

  1. Enter the wall size or area.
  2. Choose brick size, joint and skins.
  3. Set a waste % and read the brick count.

Brick Quantity FAQ

How many bricks do I need?

Divide the wall area by the brick face plus its mortar joint, then add waste. A standard UK single-skin wall needs about 60 bricks per square metre.

How many bricks are in a square metre?

About 60 for a UK single-skin wall (215 × 65 mm bricks with a 10 mm joint), or roughly 120 for a double-skin wall.

Why include the mortar joint?

Each brick is laid with mortar around it, so its effective size is larger. Ignoring the joint overestimates how many bricks fit in the area.

What's the difference between single and double skin?

A single skin is one brick thick; a double (cavity) wall is two, so it needs roughly twice as many bricks.

How much waste should I allow?

About 5% for breakages and cuts on a simple wall, more for complex layouts or lots of openings.

Is the brick quantity calculator free?

Yes, this brick quantity calculator is completely free, needs no sign-up, and gives instant results in your browser.
