Comma to New Line Converter

This comma to new line converter splits a comma-separated string into a clean list with one item per line. Paste tags, email addresses, product codes or a row copied from a CSV file, and the tool trims spaces, drops empty entries and respects quoted values that contain commas. Flip the mode to join a list back into a single line.

How the Comma to New Line Converter Works

The tool walks through your text one character at a time. Each time it meets the delimiter outside a pair of double quotes, it closes the current item and starts a new one; existing line breaks also end an item. In the other direction it reads each line as an item and joins them with the delimiter you pick.

Formula: items = text split at every delimiter that is not inside double quotes, and at every line break. A doubled quote inside a quoted item (“”) becomes one literal quote, and the wrapping quotes are removed. Clean-up order: trim → drop empty → drop duplicates (first copy kept). Split output = items joined by \n. Join output = items joined by delimiter + optional space, with any item containing the delimiter or a quote wrapped in double quotes.

  • Direction — Delimited → lines, or Lines → delimited.
  • Input — the comma-separated text, or a list with one item per line.
  • Delimiter / Custom delimiter — comma, semicolon, pipe, tab, space, or any string you type.
  • Trim, Remove empty items, Remove duplicates — clean-up switches.
  • Respect double quotes — keeps “Jones, Jr.” together as one item, as CSV files expect.
  • Add a space after the delimiter — join mode only; gives a, b, c instead of a,b,c.

Tips to Split Comma Separated Values Correctly

The usual trap is a comma that belongs to the data. Names such as Jones, Jr., numbers written as 1,250 and addresses all contain commas that should not start a new line. A comma to new line converter can only tell them apart when the value is wrapped in double quotes, so keep Respect double quotes on for anything exported from a spreadsheet.

  • Check the item count in the stats against what you expected. One extra item usually means a stray comma inside a number.
  • European exports often use semicolons, because the comma is their decimal mark. Switch the delimiter before you replace comma with line break.
  • For a csv to list job on a whole file, split one column at a time; a full row mixes fields from different columns.
  • To turn comma to column in a spreadsheet, paste the result into the first cell; each line fills the next row down.

Quoting rules for comma-separated data were written down in RFC 4180, and Wikipedia’s comma-separated values article covers them along with the regional variants you are likely to meet.

Comma to New Line Converter FAQ

Is this list splitter free to use online?Yes. This comma to new line converter needs no account and has no item limit you are likely to reach. The splitting runs in your browser, so lists of customer emails or internal codes never leave your device. Lists of several thousand items split instantly.
How do I do the same thing in Excel? In Microsoft 365, =TEXTSPLIT(A1,,CHAR(44)) spills each comma-separated value into its own row; CHAR(44) is the comma. In older versions, use Data, Text to Columns with comma as the delimiter, then copy the row and Paste Special with Transpose to turn the columns into a vertical list.
Can the comma to new line converter keep commas inside quotes?Yes. With Respect double quotes on, a value such as a quoted name containing a comma stays in one piece and the surrounding quotes are removed. A doubled quote inside the value becomes a single quote mark, which matches how spreadsheet programs export CSV files. Turn the option off to split at every comma.
How do I replace commas with line breaks in Word or a text editor? In Microsoft Word, open Find and Replace, search for a comma and replace with ^p, the code for a paragraph mark. In editors with regex search, such as VS Code or Notepad++, replace a comma followed by optional spaces with \n. Both ignore quoting, so check names with commas afterwards.
How do I turn a vertical list back into comma-separated text?Switch the direction to Lines → delimited, paste one item per line and pick comma as the delimiter. Keep Add a space after the delimiter on for readable text, or untick it for strict data such as tag fields. Items that contain a comma are wrapped in quotes automatically when quote handling is on.
Can I split on something other than commas?Yes. Choose semicolon, pipe, tab or space from the list, or pick Custom and type any string, such as a slash with spaces or the word and. The custom delimiter is matched exactly, including spaces, so a slash with spaces will not split text that uses a bare slash.
