“Ideal weight” formulas are rough population estimates and don’t account for build, muscle or age. A healthy weight is personal — ask a healthcare professional.

Use this free ideal weight calculator to estimate a healthy weight for your height. It uses the established Devine, Robinson and Miller formulas alongside the healthy BMI range, so you can compare several standard estimates at once.

What this ideal weight calculator shows you

An ideal weight calculator estimates a reference weight for a given height and sex. This one shows results from the Devine, Robinson and Miller formulas plus the healthy BMI range, since there’s no single agreed definition of “ideal” weight — comparing them gives a more honest picture than any one number.

Keep in mind: these formulas were designed mainly for medication dosing and population reference, not as personal goals. They don’t account for build, muscle, age or body composition. A genuinely healthy weight is individual — please treat this as background information, not a target.

How ideal weight is calculated

Each formula starts from a base weight at 5 feet (60 inches) of height and adds a set amount for every inch above that. For example, the Devine formula for men is 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet; for women it’s 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch. Robinson and Miller use the same idea with slightly different constants, which is why their results differ.

The standard formulas compared

Formula Men (base + per inch over 5ft) Women
Devine 50 kg + 2.3 kg 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg
Robinson 52 kg + 1.9 kg 49 kg + 1.7 kg
Miller 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg

For a 178 cm man, these give roughly 70–73 kg, which is why the calculator also shows the average and the wider healthy BMI range.

How to use the ideal weight calculator

  1. Select your sex. The formulas use different constants for men and women.
  2. Choose your units and enter your height.
  3. Read your results. Each formula’s estimate and the healthy BMI range appear instantly.

Why there’s no single “ideal” weight

  • Build and frame size vary widely between people of the same height.
  • Muscle mass raises weight without raising health risk.
  • Age and life stage shift what’s healthy over time.
  • Health is about more than weight — fitness, diet and bloodwork all matter.

Ideal Weight FAQ

How is ideal weight calculated?

Standard formulas start from a base weight at 5 feet of height and add a fixed amount per inch above that. The Devine formula for men is 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet; women use 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg. Robinson and Miller use similar formulas with different constants.

Which ideal weight formula is best?

None is definitively "best" — they were created for clinical reference and give slightly different numbers. Comparing several alongside the healthy BMI range gives a more realistic picture than any single figure.

Is ideal weight the same as a healthy weight?

Not necessarily. "Ideal weight" formulas are population estimates and ignore build, muscle and age. A healthy weight is individual, so use these as background and ask a professional about what's right for you.

Why does sex change the result?

The formulas use different base weights for men and women to reflect average differences in body composition, so selecting your sex gives a more appropriate estimate.

Does this account for body frame or muscle?

No. These formulas depend only on height and sex, so they can't distinguish muscle from body fat. That's a key limitation to keep in mind.

Is the ideal weight calculator free to use?

Yes, this ideal weight calculator is completely free, needs no sign-up, and gives instant results directly in your browser.
