Percent off is the share of the original price that is removed in a sale. “30% off” means you pay 70% of the original price. To find the new price, multiply the original by (100 − percent off) ÷ 100 — so a $50 item at 30% off costs $50 × 0.70 = $35.
This percent off calculator does that math for you and also shows the dollar amount saved, with an optional sales-tax line for the true checkout price.
New price = Original × (100 − Percent off) ÷ 100
Or find the savings first: multiply the price by the percent off, then subtract. Both give the same answer. For a $120 item at 40% off: $120 × 0.40 = $48 off, leaving a $72 new price.
If you know the original and sale prices, the percent off = (Original − Sale) ÷ Original × 100. A jacket marked down from $80 to $52 is ($80 − $52) ÷ $80 × 100 = 35% off.
| Original | 20% off | 30% off | 40% off |
|---|---|---|---|
| $25 | $20.00 | $17.50 | $15.00 |
| $60 | $48.00 | $42.00 | $36.00 |
| $120 | $96.00 | $84.00 | $72.00 |
| $250 | $200.00 | $175.00 | $150.00 |
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| Percent off | The portion of the price removed in a sale, shown as a percentage. |
| New price | What you pay after the percent off is applied. |
| Amount saved | The dollar value of the reduction. |
| Final price | The new price plus any sales tax. |
Percent off is the share of the original price removed in a sale. "30% off" means you pay 70% of the original price, so a $50 item at 30% off costs $35.
Multiply the original price by (100 minus the percent off) divided by 100. For a $120 item at 40% off: $120 × 0.60 = $72. Or multiply the price by the percent off to get the savings, then subtract.
Subtract the sale price from the original, divide by the original, and multiply by 100. A jacket reduced from $80 to $52 is ($80 − $52) ÷ $80 × 100 = 35% off.
Yes. 50% off means the price is reduced by half, so you pay 50% of the original. A $40 item at 50% off costs $20.
You can, but they don't simply add. A second percent off applies to the already-reduced price, so 20% off after 50% off gives a 60% effective discount, not 70%.
