VO2 Max Estimator

Estimate your aerobic fitness. This free VO2 max calculator uses either the Cooper 12-minute run test or your resting heart rate to estimate VO2 max, with a fitness category for your age and sex.

Estimate method

Run/walk as far as you can on flat ground in exactly 12 minutes, then enter the distance. Warm up first and only attempt if you’re healthy and used to exercise.

An estimate, not a lab test. True VO2 max is measured with specialised equipment. Field estimates have a meaningful margin of error – use them to track trends, not as exact figures.

How the VO2 Max Estimator Works

This calculator estimates your VO2 max — a common marker of aerobic fitness — using either the distance you cover in a 12-minute run (the Cooper test) or your resting heart rate, then places the result into a fitness category for your age and sex.

Formula (Cooper 12-minute test): VO2 max = (Distance in meters − 504.9) ÷ 44.73. Formula (resting heart rate method): Max heart rate (HRmax) = 220 − Age, then VO2 max = 15.3 × (HRmax ÷ Resting heart rate).

  • Distance covered in 12 minutes — how far you ran or walked in exactly 12 minutes (Cooper test method), in meters or miles.
  • Age — used to estimate max heart rate (220 − age) for the resting heart rate method, and to look up your fitness category.
  • Resting heart rate — your heart rate at full rest, used in the resting heart rate method’s formula.
  • Sex and category age — selected to look up your VO2 max fitness category (Poor through Superior) against age- and sex-specific benchmark ranges.

VO2 Max Estimator FAQ

Which method is more accurate: Cooper test or resting heart rate? Both are field estimates, not laboratory measurements, so neither is exact. The Cooper 12-minute run test directly measures a real performance effort, while the resting heart rate method is quicker but relies more heavily on the 220 minus age max heart rate estimate, which has its own margin of error.
How do I safely perform the Cooper 12-minute run test?Warm up beforehand, then run or walk as far as you can on flat ground for exactly 12 minutes at a pace you can sustain the whole time. Only attempt it if you’re healthy and already used to exercise, and stop if you feel chest pain, dizziness, or unusual breathlessness.
What do the fitness categories (Poor to Superior) mean? The calculator compares your estimated VO2 max against benchmark ranges specific to your age group and sex, sorting the result into Poor, Fair, Good, Excellent, or Superior. These labels describe where your estimate falls relative to typical ranges for people your age and sex, not a medical diagnosis.
Can women and men use the same VO2 max formula? The VO2 max formulas themselves (Cooper test and resting heart rate) are the same for everyone. Sex is used only afterward, to select the correct age- and sex-specific benchmark table when categorizing your result as Poor through Superior.
How does VO2 max relate to overall cardiovascular fitness?VO2 max estimates the maximum rate at which your body can use oxygen during intense exercise, and it’s commonly used as a general indicator of aerobic fitness. A higher estimate generally suggests a greater capacity for sustained cardiovascular effort, though it’s only one piece of overall fitness.
Why do I need to enter my age and sex for the category?VO2 max naturally varies by age and sex, so the calculator uses separate benchmark ranges for each age bracket and sex to place your number in context. Without both, it can still estimate your VO2 max number but can’t tell you how that number compares to others.
