Haiku Checker

This haiku checker counts the syllables in each line of your poem and tells you whether it fits the classic 5-7-5 pattern. Type or paste three lines and you see the count for every word, so you know exactly which line to trim or stretch. It suits students, teachers marking assignments and anyone writing short verse.

How the Haiku Checker Works

Each non-empty line is split into words, and every word gets a syllable estimate. The estimate starts with the number of vowel groups in the spelling, then corrects for patterns English speakers do not pronounce, such as the silent e in fade or the -es in hopes. Line totals are compared with the 5-7-5 target.

Formula: syllables per word = count of vowel groups (a, e, i, o, u, y) − 1 for a silent final e (but not -le after a consonant, as in apple) − 1 for a silent -es or -ed ending (kept after s, x, z, ch, sh, ce, ge and t, d) + 1 for a vowel before -ing (being) + 1 for split vowel pairs such as io in lion. Words such as people and quiet come from an exceptions list. Minimum 1 per word. Line total = sum of its words; target = 5, 7, 5.

  • Your poem — three lines of English text, one per line. Blank lines are ignored and punctuation does not count.
  • Line 1, Line 2, Line 3 — the syllable count, with OK or how far it is from 5, 7 and 5.
  • Total — all syllables; a 5-7-5 haiku has 17.
  • Word breakdown, Copy report, Clear — the count for each word, ready to copy into feedback.

Is My Haiku Correct? Tips Beyond the Syllable Count

A haiku checker can confirm the arithmetic, but the count is only part of the form. Teachers usually also look for a concrete image from nature, a hint of the season and a turn or contrast between the first part and the second.

  • Read each line aloud and tap the syllables. Words such as fire, hour, every and poem vary by accent, so trust your own speech when the tool and your ear disagree.
  • To fix a long line, swap a two-syllable word for a one-syllable one (quiet becomes still) rather than cutting the image.
  • If a haiku generator checker suggests filler words like so or just, leave them out; they pad the count without adding meaning.

The 5-7-5 rule comes from Japanese, where the counted unit is shorter than an English syllable. Wikipedia’s article on haiku in English explains why many English-language poets now aim for fewer than 17 syllables.

Haiku Checker FAQ

Is this 5-7-5 syllable checker free to use online?Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up and runs in your browser, so your poem is never uploaded or stored. You can check as many drafts as you like, and the counts update with every letter you type, which makes it easy to try different words until each line lands on target.
How accurate is the haiku syllable counter? For everyday English words it agrees with a dictionary most of the time, because it combines spelling rules with a list of common exceptions. Unusual names, borrowed words and words with optional syllables, such as fire or family, can be off by one. Check any word in the breakdown that looks wrong.
Does a haiku checker work for Japanese haiku? Not directly. Japanese haiku count on, short sound units roughly like a kana character, not English syllables. The word haiku itself has two English syllables but three on: ha-i-ku. This tool applies English spelling rules, so for Japanese text you need to count on by hand or with a kana-based counter.
Do English haiku have to be exactly 5-7-5?No. The 5-7-5 pattern is the version most schools teach and many contests ask for, so it is the pattern this checker uses. Many published English-language haiku use fewer syllables, often around 10 to 14, to stay closer to the brevity of the Japanese form.
Why does the tool count a word differently from me?Syllables depend on pronunciation, and English spelling does not always show it. Words like hour, our and fire can be one or two syllables depending on accent. If your count differs by one on a single word, adjust the line by ear; the tool is a guide, not a final judge.
Can the haiku checker suggest replacement words? It does not rewrite your poem, but the per-word breakdown shows exactly where the extra or missing syllables are. Try swapping a word for a synonym with a different count: silent for still, morning for dawn. Each change updates the totals instantly.
