Volume Calculator

Find the volume of any common solid. This free volume calculator covers boxes, cubes, spheres, cylinders, cones and pyramids — with the result in cubic units and litres.

Solid & size

Choose a 3-D shape and enter its dimensions. Volume is given in cubic units of whatever unit you use (e.g. cm → cm³). A litre = 1000 cm³.

Volume measures the 3-D space a solid occupies. For the area of a flat shape use the area calculator; for the distance around a circle use the circumference calculator.

How the Volume Calculator Works

This tool finds the volume of a 3-D solid you pick from a dropdown — box, cube, sphere, cylinder, cone, or pyramid — using the dimension fields for that shape. Results are given in cubic units, with a litre equal to 1000 cm³.

Formula: Box: Volume = Length × Width × Height. Cube: Volume = Side^3. Sphere: Volume = (4 ÷ 3) × π × Radius^3. Cylinder: Volume = π × Radius^2 × Height. Cone: Volume = (1 ÷ 3) × π × Radius^2 × Height. Pyramid (rectangular base): Volume = (1 ÷ 3) × Base length × Base width × Height.

  • Shape — the dropdown selection that determines which dimension fields appear
  • Length / Width / Height — used for the box and the pyramid’s rectangular base
  • Side — the edge length used for the cube
  • Radius — used for the sphere, cylinder, and cone
  • Height — used alongside Radius for the cylinder and cone

Volume Calculator FAQ

Which solids can this volume calculator handle? It covers boxes (rectangular prisms), cubes, spheres, cylinders, cones, and pyramids with a rectangular base. Choose your shape from the dropdown and enter the dimensions it asks for.
How is a cone’s volume different from a cylinder’s?A cone with the same radius and height as a cylinder holds exactly one-third the volume, since the cone formula multiplies the cylinder formula (Ï€r²h) by one-third to account for the shape tapering to a point.
What does “litres” mean in the result and how is it converted?A litre equals 1000 cubic centimetres. If you enter your dimensions in centimeters, the calculator can express the cubic-centimetre result in litres by dividing by 1000.
How do I find the volume of a pyramid with a rectangular base?Select “Pyramid (rectangular base)” from the dropdown, then enter the base’s length and width along with the pyramid’s height. The volume is one-third of length × width × height.
What units does the output use?Whatever unit you enter for the dimensions is cubed in the result, so measurements in centimeters give a volume in cubic centimeters (cm³), and meters give cubic meters (m³).
What’s the difference between volume and area?Area measures 2-D space, like the flat surface of a shape, while volume measures the 3-D space a solid occupies. For a flat shape’s area instead, use the area calculator.

For the 2-D counterpart to any of these solids’ cross-sections, the area calculator covers rectangles, circles, and more. If you also need the distance around a circular base, the circumference calculator handles that, and once you know a solid’s volume, the density calculator can turn it into mass or density using a known material.
