How much will your gift list actually cost this year? This free gift budget calculator adds up your recipients and per-person budget, plus a monthly savings target if you’re planning ahead.
How the Gift Budget Calculator Works
Gift-giving overspending usually happens because the full list never gets added up in one place. This calculator multiplies your number of recipients by a per-person budget to get a total gift budget, then, if you enter how many months you have left to save, divides that total by the months remaining to give you a monthly savings target.
Formula: Total Gift Budget = Number of Recipients × Budget per Person. Monthly Savings Needed = Total Gift Budget ÷ Months to Save (only calculated when a number of months is entered).
- Number of people — how many recipients are on your gift list, entered in the “Number of people” field.
- Budget per person — how much you plan to spend on each recipient, entered in dollars in the “Budget per person” field.
- Months to save (optional) — how many months you have left before you need the money, entered in the “Months to save” field; leave blank if you’re not planning ahead.
- Total gift budget — recipients multiplied by budget per person, shown as the main result.
- Monthly savings needed — the total gift budget divided by months to save, shown only when a months value is entered.

Gift Budget Calculator FAQ
How do I set a realistic per-person gift budget?
Look at what you’ve actually spent on similar recipients in past years rather than guessing. If your list mixes close family and casual acquaintances, consider running this calculator separately for each group with a different per-person amount. What happens if I leave the months to save field blank?
The calculator still shows your total gift budget based on recipients and budget per person, but skips the monthly savings target since there’s no timeframe to divide the total by. Fill in a months value only if you’re saving up in advance. How does the monthly savings target help me plan ahead of a holiday?
It converts one lump total into a smaller, recurring amount you can set aside automatically each month, which is usually easier to manage than saving the full amount in the final weeks before you need it.Should I include gift wrapping, shipping, or cards in my per-person budget?
The calculator only multiplies recipients by the amount you enter, so if you want wrapping, shipping, or cards included, add a small buffer to your per-person figure before entering it rather than tracking those costs separately. Can I use this calculator for a specific occasion other than holidays?
Yes, the math is the same for weddings, birthdays, baby showers, or any event with a defined recipient list and per-person spending target — just enter the relevant number of people and budget for that occasion. What if my per-person budget varies a lot between recipients?
Use an average per-person figure across your whole list for a quick estimate, or run the calculator multiple times for different spending tiers (for example, close family versus coworkers) and add the totals together.Related Calculators
