Exclusive vs Inclusive Counting
By default, this calculator counts the number of nights between the two dates – the gap between them. Ticking “inclusive” adds one to that count, which is how you’d count every calendar day within a span, such as the total number of days of a vacation or event that includes both the arrival and departure day.
A Worked Example
From January 15 to March 10 in the same year is 55 days – or 7 weeks and 6 days. Broken into calendar units, that’s 1 month and 24 days, or equivalently 0 years, 1 month, 24 days.
Why the Years-Months-Days Breakdown Uses Calendar Months
Unlike a simple division by 30, this calculator’s years-months-days breakdown respects actual calendar month lengths – including leap years – so a span crossing February in a leap year correctly accounts for that extra day rather than assuming every month is the same length.
Why “Approximate Months” Is Labeled as Approximate
The total months figure divides the day count by an average month length, which is useful for a rough sense of scale but won’t always match the calendar-based years-months-days breakdown exactly, since real months vary between 28 and 31 days.
