How the Overtime Calculator Works

Overtime pay boosts your hourly rate for hours worked beyond your regular schedule, typically at 1.5× or 2× your base rate. This calculator separates your regular and overtime hours, applies the multiplier you choose, and adds both pieces together to show your total gross pay.

Formula: Total Pay = (Regular Hours × Hourly Rate) + (Overtime Hours × Hourly Rate × Overtime Multiplier).

  • Hourly pay rate — your base gross pay per hour
  • Regular hours — hours worked at your standard, non-overtime rate
  • Overtime hours — hours worked beyond your regular schedule
  • Overtime multiplier — 1.5× for time-and-a-half or 2× for double time, applied to your hourly rate for overtime hours only

Overtime Calculator FAQ

What counts as overtime hours under most labor laws?In many places, hours worked beyond 40 in a single workweek count as overtime, though the exact threshold and rules vary by country, state, and sometimes by industry or job classification. Check your local labor rules or employment contract for the definition that applies to you.
What’s the difference between time-and-a-half and double time?Time-and-a-half pays 1.5 times your regular hourly rate for overtime hours, while double time pays twice your regular rate. Double time is less common and usually reserved for specific situations like holidays or hours worked beyond a higher daily threshold.
Does this calculator subtract taxes from my overtime pay?No, this calculator shows gross pay only — regular pay plus overtime pay before any taxes or deductions. Your actual take-home amount after overtime will be lower once taxes and withholdings are applied.
How do I calculate overtime pay for a salaried employee?First convert the salary to an equivalent hourly rate by dividing it by your typical annual hours, then enter that hourly rate here along with your regular and overtime hours. Note that salaried employees are sometimes exempt from overtime rules depending on their role and jurisdiction.
Does working overtime always mean 1.5x pay?Not necessarily — some employers or contracts use double time for certain hours, such as holidays or hours beyond a daily maximum, while others may not owe overtime at all for exempt positions. Use the multiplier that actually applies to your situation.
How is my “regular hours” figure determined if I work a mix of shifts?Add up all the hours you worked at your standard, non-overtime rate across the pay period, regardless of shift pattern, and enter that total as your regular hours. Any hours beyond your standard threshold go in the overtime hours field instead.

In the US, non-exempt employees are generally entitled to overtime at 1.5× their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek under federal law, and some states have daily overtime rules too. Double time is less common and usually set by employer policy or a union contract. Rules vary by country, so check your local labor laws.
