How Salary Calculator Works
Comparing job offers quoted in different pay periods only works once every number is converted to a common baseline. The salary calculator normalizes whatever amount and pay period you enter into an annual figure, then divides that annual figure back down into hourly, daily, weekly, bi-weekly and monthly equivalents based on your work schedule.
Formula: Annual = Amount × (Hours/Week × Weeks/Year) if paid hourly, Amount × Weeks/Year if paid weekly, Amount × 12 if paid monthly, or Amount itself if already annual. Then: Hourly = Annual ÷ (Hours/Week × Weeks/Year), Daily = Annual ÷ (Days/Week × Weeks/Year), Weekly = Annual ÷ Weeks/Year, Bi-weekly = Weekly × 2, Monthly = Annual ÷ 12.
- Amount — the pay figure you enter
- Paid per — the period that amount is quoted in: hour, week, month, or year
- Hours/week — your weekly work hours, defaulting to 40 if left blank
- Days/week — your weekly work days, defaulting to 5 if left blank
- Weeks/year — your annual work weeks, defaulting to 52 if left blank

Salary Calculator FAQ
Is the salary calculator showing gross or net pay?
It shows gross pay — the amount before income tax, payroll tax, and other deductions are subtracted. To estimate what actually lands in your bank account, run the gross figure through a take-home pay or paycheck calculator that applies tax withholding. How do I convert an hourly wage to an annual salary?
Multiply the hourly rate by your hours worked per week, then by the number of weeks you work per year. On a standard 40-hour, 52-week schedule, a $25/hour wage works out to $52,000 a year — the calculator does this automatically when you select "Hour" as the pay period. Why does bi-weekly pay not equal exactly two monthly paychecks?
Bi-weekly pay is the weekly rate doubled, and a year has 52.14 weeks but only 12 months, so 26 bi-weekly paychecks don't divide evenly into 12 months. Some months end up with three bi-weekly paychecks instead of two.How should I set the work schedule fields for a part-time job?
Enter your actual hours and days per week instead of leaving them blank, since the defaults assume a full-time 40-hour, 5-day week. A part-time role at 20 hours/week will show a correspondingly lower annual figure for the same hourly rate. Can this calculator handle unpaid time off when converting salary to hourly?
Yes, indirectly — reduce the "Weeks/year" field below 52 to account for unpaid vacation or leave, since fewer paid weeks raises the effective hourly rate needed to reach the same annual salary. Why would two salaries with the same annual pay show different hourly rates?
The hourly rate depends on how many hours you actually work per year, not just the annual salary. A job with 35 hours/week and 50 weeks/year pays a higher effective hourly rate than one with 40 hours/week and 52 weeks/year, even at the same annual salary.Related Calculators
