Remove Hashtags From Text

Paste a caption here to remove hashtags from text in one step, either deleting them outright or keeping the words and dropping only the # sign. It is built for creators and social media managers who reuse an Instagram or TikTok caption on LinkedIn, in a newsletter or on a website, and it can strip @mentions and links at the same time.

How to Remove Hashtags From Text With This Tool

A hashtag is a # followed by letters, digits or underscores, with at least one letter. The tool finds every tag that starts a word, so URL anchors such as page#faq and order numbers such as #1 stay untouched. Smart mode, which is selected when the page opens, treats the block of tags at the end of a line as clutter and deletes it, but keeps tags used as words mid-sentence by dropping only the # sign, so “at #LakeTahoe was” reads “at LakeTahoe was”.

Rule: (1) if ticked, delete links starting with http://, https:// or www.; (2) if ticked, delete @mentions; (3) Smart: repeatedly delete the last #tag on each line while only tags follow it, then turn remaining #tag into tag; Delete: remove every #tag; Keep: turn every #tag into tag; (4) tidy: squeeze double spaces, remove spaces before punctuation, trim line ends and limit blank lines to one.

  • Caption or text — any length; line breaks are kept.
  • What to do with hashtags — Smart, Delete every hashtag, or Keep the words.
  • Also remove @mentions and Also remove links — off until you tick them.
  • Tidy spaces and empty lines — ticked when the page opens; untick it to see the raw result.
  • Hashtags, Mentions, Links, Characters — what was found and the length before and after.

Hashtag Remover Tips for Repurposed Captions

Hashtags help discovery on Instagram, TikTok and X, but on a blog, in an email or on a product page they look like noise. Before you delete hashtags from caption copy, decide whether any of them carry meaning in the sentence.

  • Use Smart mode for most captions when you remove hashtags from text. It strips the trailing tag pile while keeping a sentence such as “we hiked #Yosemite” readable.
  • CamelCase tags such as #WeekendVibes stay as one word when you keep them; add the space yourself if the text is going into print.
  • Tick remove mentions from text when the post credits accounts that mean nothing off-platform, then add a proper name if credit still matters.
  • To strip hashtags from many posts, paste them all at once; each line is handled separately.

Rules for what counts as a tag differ slightly between platforms; Wikipedia’s hashtag article covers the history and conventions.

Remove Hashtags From Text FAQ

How do I drop the # sign but keep the words?Choose Keep the words, remove only the # in the menu. Every tag loses its # sign and the word stays in place, so #coffee becomes coffee. Smart mode does the same for tags inside a sentence but deletes the block of tags at the end of a line, which is usually what a repurposed caption needs.
How do I remove hashtags from text in Python? With the re module, re.sub(‘#[A-Za-z0-9_]+’, ”, text) deletes the tags, and re.sub(‘#(?=[A-Za-z0-9_])’, ”, text) removes only the # sign so the words stay. Collapse double spaces afterwards. Both patterns also catch URL anchors such as page#faq, so check links or strip them first.
How do I remove hashtags in Word?Open Find and Replace, tick Use wildcards and search for #[A-Za-z0-9_]@ with an empty Replace box, then press Replace All. That removes the tags but leaves the spaces around them. For a quicker clean with tidy spacing, paste the document text here and copy the result back.
Can I remove hashtags from text in Excel?Newer Microsoft 365 builds include REGEXREPLACE, so a formula on the caption cell with the pattern #[A-Za-z0-9_]+ and an empty replacement works there. Older versions have no regex function, which makes it awkward. For a column of captions, paste them here, one per line, and paste the clean lines back.
Does the hashtag remover also strip @mentions and links?Only when you ask it to. Tick Also remove @mentions to delete handles such as @maya.trails, and tick Also remove links to delete addresses that start with http, https or www. Email addresses are not treated as mentions, and the counts show how many of each were found either way.
Is this tool free, and is my caption private?Yes to both. It is free with no sign-up or length limit, and it runs entirely in your browser, so captions for unreleased campaigns or client accounts are never uploaded or stored. You can also download the cleaned text as a .txt file for your content calendar.
