How Conversions Are Calculated
Each category (except temperature) converts through a fixed base unit – metres for length, grams for weight, litres for volume, square metres for area, metres per second for speed. A value is first converted to the base unit, then from the base unit into every other unit in that category, using standard exact conversion factors.
For example, 10 miles converts to 16.09 kilometres (1 mile = 1,609.344 metres), and 1 pound converts to 453.59 grams.
Why Temperature Works Differently
Unlike the other categories, temperature scales don’t share a common zero point, so they can’t be converted with a simple multiplication factor. Instead, this converter uses the standard direct formulas between Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin.
Fahrenheit = Celsius x 9/5 + 32Kelvin = Celsius + 273.15
For example, 20°C equals 68°F and 293.15 K.
