Threads Character Counter

This Threads character counter tracks how much room your post has left as you type, counting emoji, links and line breaks. Set the limit, paste a draft and see the remaining characters instantly, plus a split version if the text runs long, so creators and social media managers never get cut off at publish time.

Runs entirely in your browser — nothing is uploaded. Emoji and accented letters count as one character each, the way you see them. If you leave the limit blank, the counter uses 500 for a post or 10,000 for a text attachment; platforms change limits, so type a new number if needed.

How the Threads Character Counter Works

Threads caps how long a single post can be, and anything past the cap has to go into a reply or a longer format. The Threads character counter measures your text the way a reader sees it: one emoji, one accented letter or one space each counts as a single character. It subtracts that from the limit you set and, if you run over, splits the text into post-sized pieces at word breaks.

Formula: characters = number of grapheme clusters in the text (spaces and line breaks included). Remaining = limit − characters. Posts needed = number of chunks when the text is cut at the last space before each limit; a single word longer than the limit is cut mid-word. Links = runs starting with http://, https:// or www.

  • Post / Text attachment — sets the limit used when the Character limit box is blank: 500 for a post or 10,000 for a text attachment.
  • Character limit — optional. If you leave it blank, the counter uses 500 for a post; platforms change limits, so type a new number if Threads does.
  • Your post — type or paste; counts update on every keystroke.
  • Results — characters, remaining (red when negative), words, links, emoji and posts needed, plus the split text to copy.

Threads Character Limit Tips

The Threads 500 character limit has been the commonly published cap for a standard post since launch, and Meta later added text attachments for longer pieces. Treat both numbers in this Threads character counter as starting points, not rules: Meta adjusts features, and the app itself has the final say.

  • Hook readers in the first line. The feed can collapse long posts, so the opening sentence carries the most weight regardless of total Threads post length.
  • Count links as full text. A long URL can eat 80 characters or more, so shorten or move it to a reply.
  • Line breaks count too. Spacing out a list makes it readable but costs one character per break.
  • Check the Threads text attachment limit in the app before planning an essay; the 10,000 figure here is a starting point you can edit.
  • When splitting, reread each chunk so no post ends mid-thought, and add numbering such as 1/3 yourself.

Threads Character Counter FAQ

What is the Threads character limit for a post? The commonly published limit is 500 characters for a single post, which is what this counter uses if you leave the limit box blank. Platforms change limits without much notice, so if the app lets you type more or stops you sooner, edit the Character limit box and every count updates to match the new number.
Do emoji count as more than one character? This tool counts each emoji as one character, the way it appears on screen, even when it is built from several code points such as a family or a flag. Some platforms count those differently behind the scenes, so leave a few characters spare if your post is emoji-heavy and close to the limit.
Is there a Threads character counter app or extension? You do not need to install one. This page works in any mobile or desktop browser, so you can bookmark it or add it to your home screen. Paste your draft, read the remaining count and copy the text back into Threads; nothing is stored or uploaded.
What happens if my post is over 500 characters? The app will not let you publish the extra text in a standard post. Trim it, move details into a reply, or use the Split into posts box, which cuts the draft at spaces into chunks that each fit the limit. You can then post them as a chain of replies.
Do links and hashtags count toward the limit? In this counter, yes: every visible character of a link or tag is counted, which is the safe assumption when planning a post. Threads may display or shorten links differently, so a post with a long URL might fit with a few characters to spare once published.
How long can a Threads text attachment be?Text attachments were introduced for longer writing that does not fit in a normal post, with a reported cap of 10,000 characters. The Text attachment button uses that figure when the limit box is blank, and you can type another number. Check the app if your piece runs close to the limit.
