Balloon Garland Calculator

This balloon garland calculator works out how many balloons you need for an organic garland or arch, split into 18-inch, 11-inch and 5-inch sizes. It is for party hosts, teachers, wedding DIYers and new balloon decorators who want to order the right number of bags before the event rather than run short halfway along the backdrop.

Density guide: about 10 per foot for a light garland, 15 standard, 20 very full. These are rules of thumb; cluster style and inflation size change the real count. Metric lengths are converted to feet (1 m = 3.28084 ft). If you leave balloons per foot blank, the calculator uses 15; if you leave all three size shares blank, it uses 10 / 50 / 40. Extra for pops counts as 0 when blank.

How the Balloon Garland Calculator Works

Organic garlands are built from clusters of mixed sizes tied onto a strip, so decorators usually plan them by balloons per foot rather than counting every cluster. The balloon garland calculator multiplies your length by a density, adds a spare allowance for pops and duds, and splits the total by your size mix. Each size is rounded up separately, so the shopping list can come out one or two balloons above the plain total. That is deliberate: you cannot buy part of a balloon.

Formula: Length in feet = Length (or metres × 3.28084). Balloons needed = round up (Length in feet × Balloons per foot × (1 + Extra % ÷ 100)). Balloons of each size = round up (Balloons needed × Size share ÷ 100). Balloons to buy = 18-inch + 11-inch + 5-inch counts.

  • Garland length — measured along the path the garland will follow, in feet or metres. For draped or curved runs, lay a string along the route and measure it.
  • Balloons per foot — density: roughly 10 for a light, airy garland, 15 for a standard full look and 20 for a dense, luxury style. If you leave it blank, the calculator uses 15.
  • Extra for pops (optional) — spare balloons as a percentage. 10% covers most popped or misshapen balloons; blank means no extra.
  • 18-inch, 11-inch and 5-inch share — the balloon garland size mix in percent. The three shares must add up to 100. If you leave all three blank, the calculator uses 10 / 50 / 40.

How Many Balloons for a Garland: Practical Tips

Ask five decorators how many balloons for a garland and you will hear five numbers, because the answer depends on style. Balloons per foot garland figures between 10 and 20 cover most designs. Start at 15, build one foot as a test, count what you used, and put that figure back into the balloon garland calculator.

  • Inflate smaller than the label for organic looks. An 11-inch balloon blown to about 9 to 10 inches gives a tighter, rounder garland and is less likely to pop in heat.
  • Use the 5-inch balloons to fill gaps after the main clusters are on the strip; they hide the strip and make the garland look fuller.
  • For a balloon arch calculator estimate, measure the curve, not the doorway width. A half-circle arch is roughly 1.57 times its width, plus whatever runs along the floor on each side.
  • Buy by the bag. Balloons are often sold in packs of 10, 25, 50 or 100, so round each size up to whole packs.
  • Keep outdoor garlands out of direct sun, and add spare balloons for heat, wind and kids.

Remember the strip, glue dots and a hand pump: a 10-foot garland means well over a hundred knots, and an electric inflator saves your arms. For background on latex and foil balloons, see Wikipedia’s article on balloons.

Balloon Garland Calculator FAQ

How many balloons do I need for a 10 foot garland? At a standard density of 15 balloons per foot with 10% extra, a 10-foot garland needs about 165 balloons. With a mix of 10% 18-inch, 50% 11-inch and 40% 5-inch, that means 17, 83 and 66 balloons. A light style needs closer to 100, a very full one around 220.
Can I use the balloon garland calculator online for free?Yes. It is free with no sign-up, works in any phone or desktop browser, and updates as you type. Enter the garland length in feet or metres, choose a density and size mix, and the shopping list appears instantly. Nothing is stored, so you can plan as many designs as you like.
Does it work in metres for India and Pakistan?Yes. Tap metres and enter the length; the tool converts it to feet for the density rule and shows both units in the results. A 3-metre garland at 15 balloons per foot with 10% extra needs about 165 balloons. Local balloon sizes are usually sold in the same inch sizes.
What is a good balloon garland size mix?A common starting mix is around 10% large 18-inch balloons for focal points, 50% 11-inch for the body and 40% 5-inch for filling gaps. Garlands with more 18-inch balloons look bolder and bulkier, while more 5-inch balloons give a finer, textured look. Adjust the shares and the counts update instantly.
How many balloons do I need for an arch?Measure the full curve with a string, from the floor on one side to the floor on the other, and enter that length. A semicircle arch over a 6-foot doorway is about 9.4 feet of curve, so at 15 balloons per foot with 10% extra you would need roughly 156 balloons.
How long before the party should I make a balloon garland?Latex garlands kept indoors and out of the sun usually look good for a few days, so many people build them the day before. Heat, sunlight and dry air shorten that. Assemble the clusters ahead of time, then attach and fill gaps on the day to keep the garland fresh.
