Candle Burn Time Calculator

This candle burn time calculator estimates how many hours a candle will last from its wax weight, wax type and number of wicks, and adds sessions and cost per hour. It is useful for shoppers comparing jars, gift buyers and small candle makers writing a burn time on a label, as long as you treat the result as an estimate rather than a lab test.

If you leave the burn rate blank, the calculator uses the typical rate for the chosen wax (soy 8, paraffin 7, beeswax 9, coconut blend 8 hours per ounce per wick), a rough rule of thumb. Wick size, container width, fragrance load and drafts change the real figure, so type your own rate if you have tested your candles. Wicks count as 1 when blank; session length and price are optional.

How the Candle Burn Time Calculator Works

A candle is fuel, and a wick burns that fuel at a fairly steady rate once the melt pool is established. So the simplest honest estimate is weight times a burn rate. Candle makers often quote candle burn time per ounce of wax, and the candle burn time calculator uses that approach: it multiplies the net wax weight by hours per ounce for one wick, then divides by the number of wicks, since each flame consumes wax at the same time. It then splits the total into sessions and works out what each hour of glow costs you.

Formula: Ounces = Wax weight (or grams ÷ 28.3495). Burn time (hours) = Ounces × Burn rate (hours per ounce) ÷ Number of wicks. Full sessions = round down (Burn time ÷ Hours per session). Wax per hour = Wicks ÷ Burn rate. Cost per hour = Price ÷ Burn time.

  • Wax weight (net) — the wax only, usually printed as net weight on the label; do not include the jar or lid.
  • Wax type — sets the typical burn rate used when the Burn rate box is blank: soy 8, paraffin 7, beeswax 9 and coconut blend 8 hours per ounce.
  • Burn rate (optional) — hours one wick takes to burn one ounce. If you leave it blank, the calculator uses the wax type’s rate; type your own figure from test burns to override it.
  • Number of wicks — each wick burns wax at the same time, so three wicks finish a candle roughly three times faster. If you leave it blank, the calculator uses 1.
  • Hours per session (optional) — how long you burn it at a time; 3 to 4 hours is a common recommendation.
  • Candle price (optional) — what you paid, for the cost per hour.

Soy Candle Burn Rate and Tips for Longer Burns

No single soy candle burn rate fits every jar. Wick size, container diameter, fragrance load and room drafts can move real burn time well away from any rule of thumb, which is why makers test-burn their own designs. Use the candle burn time calculator to compare candles on the same basis, then trust your own measurements over the typical rate.

  • Measure your own rate. Weigh a candle, burn it for exactly 4 hours, let it cool and weigh again. Hours divided by ounces lost is your real rate per wick.
  • Let the first burn reach a full melt pool to the edge of the jar. Short first burns cause tunnelling, which leaves wax unburned on the walls and cuts total hours.
  • Trim the wick to about a quarter inch before each light. A long wick burns hotter, smokes and eats wax faster.
  • Keep candles away from fans, vents and open windows; a flickering flame burns unevenly and faster.
  • Stop with about half an inch of wax left in the jar for safety, so real burn time is a little less than the full wax weight suggests.

If you sell candles, label claims should come from your own test burns, not a formula. For the history of candles and how wicks and waxes work, see Wikipedia’s article on candles.

Candle Burn Time Calculator FAQ

How long will an 8 oz candle last?A single-wick 8 oz soy candle lasts roughly 50 to 70 hours, and the calculator’s soy rate of 8 hours per ounce gives 64 hours. At three hours a night that is about three weeks of evenings. Two or three wicks shorten the total, while a narrow jar and a well-trimmed wick stretch it.
How long does a candle burn per ounce?Common rules of thumb fall around 7 to 9 hours per ounce of wax for a single wick, depending on wax type and wick size. Beeswax tends to burn slowly, and paraffin often faster than soy. Test your own candles by weighing them before and after a timed burn for a reliable figure.
Is there a candle burn time calculator in Excel? You can make one with one formula: wax ounces times hours per ounce, divided by the number of wicks. This page does the same math, converts grams automatically, and adds sessions and cost per hour. It works on a phone without a spreadsheet, so you can check candles while shopping.
Does it work with grams for India and Pakistan?Yes. Tap grams and enter the net wax weight from the label; the tool converts it to ounces using 28.3495 grams per ounce before applying the burn rate. A 226-gram soy jar, close to 8 ounces, comes out at about 63.8 hours with one wick.
Do multi-wick candles burn faster?Yes. Each flame consumes wax at the same time, so a three-wick candle uses wax roughly three times as fast as a single wick of the same size. That is why big three-wick candles can have shorter burn times than smaller single-wick jars. Wide containers need several wicks to melt evenly to the edge.
How long should I burn a candle at one time? Many candle makers suggest burning until the melt pool reaches the edge of the container, often 2 to 4 hours, and not more than about 4 hours at once. Longer sessions can overheat the jar and make the wick mushroom. Always follow the safety label on your specific candle.
