Bike Calculator

Plan rides and check your speed. This free bike calculator links cycling distance, time and average speed – enter any two and it finds the third, with pace, in metric or imperial.

Enter any two of distance, time and speed – the calculator works out the third. Leave the one you want to find blank.

Average speed assumes a steady effort; real rides vary with wind, hills, drafting and stops. A handy planning estimate, not a guarantee.

How the Bike Calculator Works

The Bike Calculator links cycling distance, time and average speed – fill in any two of the three fields and it solves for the one you left blank, in either metric or imperial units.

Formula: if Distance and Time are known, Speed = Distance ÷ Time (hours). If Distance and Speed are known, Time (hours) = Distance ÷ Speed. If Time and Speed are known, Distance = Speed × Time (hours). Time is converted to decimal hours as (hours + minutes ÷ 60 + seconds ÷ 3600). Pace (minutes per unit) = 60 ÷ Speed.

  • Distance — the length of the ride, in km or miles (set by the units toggle)
  • Time (h : m : s) — the hours, minutes and seconds the ride took
  • Average speed — your average riding speed, in km/h or mph
  • Units toggle — switches the calculator between km / km-h and miles / mph

Bike Calculator FAQ

How do I find my average speed for a ride?Enter the distance you rode and the total time it took, and leave Average speed blank; the calculator divides distance by time in hours to give your average speed in km/h or mph.
Can this calculator tell me how long a route will take?Yes – enter the route’s distance and your expected average speed, leaving Time blank, and it works out the time by dividing distance by speed.
What’s the difference between average speed and pace?Average speed is distance covered per hour (e.g. km/h); pace is the inverse, minutes taken per unit distance (e.g. min/mile) – the calculator shows both once you have a speed value.
Why does my ride-tracking app’s average speed differ from what I calculate here? Many cycling apps exclude stopped time or use a “moving average,” while this calculator uses whatever total time you enter, including any stops – use only your moving time here if you want a closer match.
Does the calculator account for hills, wind or drafting? No – it only does straightforward distance/time/speed math; a steady 30 km/h feels very different on a flat tailwind ride versus a hilly headwind ride, so treat the output as a planning estimate.
Can I switch between km and miles partway through?Yes – use the units toggle to switch the calculator between km/km-h and miles/mph, but re-enter your values in the newly selected unit since it doesn’t auto-convert existing entries.
