How the Fence Calculator Works
The Fence Calculator estimates how many posts a fence run needs based on its total length and post spacing, then combines post pricing with a per-linear-foot material rate to give you a total cost estimate. It’s built for quick planning-stage numbers before you get a contractor quote.
Formula: Posts needed = ROUND UP(Total fence length ÷ Post spacing) + 1. Estimated material cost = (Posts needed × Price per post) + (Total fence length × Price per linear ft). The “+1” accounts for the final end post that closes out the run of spacing intervals.
- Total fence length — the full perimeter or run length of fence being built, in feet
- Post spacing — the distance between posts, in feet (commonly 6–8 ft for wood fencing)
- Price per post — the dollar cost of a single fence post
- Price per linear ft — the dollar cost of fencing material per linear foot (rails, pickets, panels, etc.)
