How many calories does a wall sit burn? This free wall sit calorie calculator estimates calories from your body weight, hold time, sets and variation, including your burn rate per minute.

How the Wall Sit Calorie Calculator Works
A wall sit is an isometric hold, so unlike moving exercises its calorie burn comes almost entirely from how long you hold the position rather than reps. This calculator uses your body weight, hold time per set, number of sets, and the intensity of your wall sit variation to estimate total calories burned, and separately shows how much of that total is “active” burn above your baseline resting rate.
Formula: Calories per minute = (MET × 3.5 × Weight in kg) ÷ 200. Total minutes = (Hold Time per Set × Sets) ÷ 60. Total Calories = Calories per minute × Total minutes. Active Burn = Total Calories − Baseline Calories, where Baseline Calories uses the same formula with MET = 1.0 for the same duration.
- Body weight — your weight in pounds, converted to kilograms for the calculation
- Hold time per set — how many seconds you hold the wall sit position in a single set
- Sets — how many times you repeat the hold
- Variation — Light (2.5 MET), Standard (3.5 MET), or Vigorous (5.0 MET), reflecting how demanding your wall sit style is
Example Scenarios
| Body Weight | Hold Time × Sets | Variation | Calories Burned |
|---|---|---|---|
| 160 lb | 45 sec × 3 | Standard (3.5 MET) | ~10.0 kcal |
| 200 lb | 60 sec × 4 | Vigorous (5.0 MET) | ~31.8 kcal |
| 140 lb | 30 sec × 3 | Light (2.5 MET) | ~4.2 kcal |
| 180 lb | 45 sec × 5 | Standard (3.5 MET) | ~18.8 kcal |
| 160 lb | 60 sec × 3 | Vigorous (5.0 MET) | ~19.1 kcal |
Wall Sit Calorie Calculator FAQ
How many calories does a 45-second wall sit burn?
For a 160 lb person doing 3 sets of a 45-second hold at Standard intensity, the estimate comes out to about 10 kcal total. Because a wall sit is a static hold rather than a moving exercise, the total stays fairly low even across multiple sets. Why does the calculator show an “active burn” separate from total calories?
Your body burns some calories just existing (baseline/BMR-equivalent) regardless of the wall sit itself. The active burn figure subtracts that baseline share from your total, isolating the calories attributable specifically to holding the wall sit position.Does a harder wall sit variation burn meaningfully more calories?
Yes — moving from Light (2.5 MET) to Vigorous (5.0 MET) roughly doubles the calories-per-minute rate in the formula, since MET scales the result directly. A single-leg or weighted wall sit variation at Vigorous intensity burns noticeably more than a basic Light hold of the same duration.Does adding more sets increase total calories more than holding longer?
Mathematically, both increase total minutes the same way — 3 sets of 60 seconds and 1 set of 180 seconds give the same total time and therefore the same estimated calories in this calculator, since total minutes is simply hold time times sets.Is a wall sit a good way to burn a lot of calories?
Based on the MET values used here, wall sits burn calories at a modest rate compared to dynamic cardio exercises, since holding still uses less total energy than continuous movement. Wall sits are more commonly valued for building lower-body isometric strength and endurance than for high calorie burn. Why do I need to enter my body weight in pounds for this calculator?
The input field is set up for pounds, which the calculator converts internally to kilograms to run the MET-based formula. Entering your weight in pounds as prompted keeps the conversion accurate; entering a kilogram figure into a pounds field would throw off the result.Related Calculators
