Yoga Calorie Burn Calculator

How many calories does yoga burn? This free yoga calorie burn calculator estimates calories by style, weight and session length – from gentle restorative to Power and Hot yoga.

min

Calories are estimated from the style’s MET value, your weight and time. Flowing and heated styles burn more than gentle, restorative ones.

A general estimate – real burn varies with effort, how long you hold poses, breathing and heat. Yoga’s benefits for flexibility, strength and stress reach well beyond calories.

How the Yoga Calorie Burn Calculator Works

The Yoga Calorie Burn Calculator estimates calories burned during a yoga session by combining your body weight with the MET value assigned to the style you practiced, then scaling that rate by how long you practiced. Gentle, restorative styles sit at the low end of the MET scale, while heated or flowing styles sit higher.

Formula: Calories per hour = MET × body weight (kg). Calories per minute = calories per hour ÷ 60. Total calories = calories per minute × duration (minutes).

  • Body weight — your weight, entered in kilograms or pounds (a toggle button converts pounds to kilograms)
  • Yoga style — the style you select from the dropdown, each carrying its own fixed MET value (2.3 MET for Restorative/Yin up to 5.5 MET for Hot/Bikram)
  • Duration — how many minutes your session lasted

Choosing the Right Style in the Yoga Calorie Burn Calculator

The style you select matters more than anything else in a yoga calorie burn calculator, because class names vary so much between studios.

  • Match the class, not the label. A “flow” class that is mostly slow stretching fits hatha better than power vinyasa.
  • Split mixed sessions. If a class is 40 minutes of flow and 20 of relaxation, enter the two parts separately in the yoga calorie burn calculator and add them together.
  • Hot rooms make you sweat more, but much of the weight lost afterwards is water, not fat, so do not judge a yoga calorie burn calculator result for hot yoga by the scales.

Yoga’s value is not mainly about calories. Balance, flexibility, strength and stress relief all matter, and a yoga calorie burn calculator cannot measure those.

Talk to a doctor before hot yoga if you are pregnant or have heart problems or low blood pressure, and stay well hydrated. The hot yoga article on Wikipedia covers heat levels and safety points to weigh alongside the yoga calorie burn calculator.

Yoga Calorie Burn Calculator FAQ

Why does Hot/Bikram yoga burn more calories than restorative yoga at the same weight and duration? Each style carries its own MET value, and Hot/Bikram is set much higher (5.5 MET) than Restorative/Yin (2.3 MET) to reflect the added metabolic demand of a faster pace and heated room. Since the formula multiplies MET directly by weight and time, that gap in MET produces a large gap in the calorie estimate.
Can I estimate a session that mixes multiple yoga styles? Not in a single calculation – the calculator applies one MET value per run. For a mixed session, calculate each style segment separately using its own duration, then add the totals together to get your full-session estimate.
How much does body weight affect the calorie estimate?Quite a lot, since calories per hour equal MET × body weight in kilograms – the relationship is directly proportional. A heavier person and a lighter person practicing the identical style for the identical duration will get different calorie estimates purely because of the weight term in the formula.
Is Vinyasa/flow a good middle-ground choice between gentle and intense yoga?By MET value, yes – Vinyasa/flow sits at 4 MET, between gentle Hatha (3 MET) and Power/Ashtanga (5 MET) in the dropdown. That reflects its continuous, flowing movement between poses compared to the more static holds of gentler styles.
Should I count only active poses, or the whole class including relaxation time?Enter whatever total duration you want estimated – the calculator applies the style’s MET value across the full minutes you input. If a class includes an extended relaxation segment you’d like to exclude, subtract that time before entering your duration.
Can I switch between kilograms and pounds without re-entering my weight?Yes. Tap the unit toggle button next to the weight field; it converts pounds to kilograms internally (0.453592 kg per pound) and recalculates immediately, so you don’t need to re-type your weight after switching units.
