Work out your class grade. This free grade calculator combines weighted assignments, tests and exams into your overall percentage and letter grade, and works mid-semester too.
Enter each item’s score and how much it’s worth (its weight). Weights usually add up to 100%, but they don’t have to – the calculator weights by whatever you enter and tells you the total.
Your grade is each item’s score multiplied by its weight, summed, then divided by the total weight. If the weights add up to less than 100%, this shows your grade on the work completed so far.
What This Grade Calculator Does
Add each graded item in your class – assignments, quizzes, tests, projects, and exams – along with its score and weight, and this calculator combines them into your current overall percentage and an approximate letter grade. It works whether your weights add up to exactly 100% or you’re only partway through the term.
The Weighted Average Formula
Grade = Sum(Score x Weight) / Sum(Weight)
For example, a Midterm scoring 85% at 30% weight, a Final scoring 90% at 40% weight, and Homework scoring 95% at 20% weight gives a weighted total of 8,050 points across 90% total weight, for an overall grade of about 89.44%.
Why This Works Mid-Semester Too
Unlike a calculation that assumes all weights must total exactly 100%, this calculator divides by whatever total weight you’ve actually entered. That means you can check your grade partway through a term, using only the items graded so far, and get an accurate current standing rather than a distorted one.
Why Weight Matters More Than the Number of Items
A single exam worth 40% of your grade affects your overall percentage far more than five small quizzes worth 5% each, even though the quizzes outnumber the exam. Always check your syllabus for each item’s actual weight rather than assuming everything counts equally.
The Approximate Letter Grade
The calculator also shows an approximate letter grade based on a standard scale (A/A+ at 93% and above, down to F below 60%). Because grading scales vary between institutions and instructors, always check your own course’s specific cutoffs for the grade that officially counts.
How to Use the Grade Calculator
- Add each graded item with its score and weight.
- Check your total weight to see how much of the grade is accounted for.
- Review your current grade and approximate letter in the results.
