Your “current grade” is your average so far, excluding the final. The final’s weight is how much it counts toward your overall grade (from your syllabus).
The score needed is found by rearranging: overall = current x (1 – final weight) + final x final weight. Solving for the final gives the mark required to reach your target.

The Formula Behind It
Overall = Current x (1 - Final Weight) + Final Score x Final Weight
Rearranged to solve for the score you need: Needed = (Target - Current x (1 - Weight)) / Weight. With a current grade of 88%, a target of 90% overall, and a final worth 30% of the grade, you’d need about 94.67% on the final.
When Your Target Is Already Secured
If your current grade, weighted by everything except the final, already meets or exceeds your target, the required score comes out at zero or below. In that case the calculator tells you your target is already secured – even scoring zero on the final wouldn’t drop you below it.
When Your Target Is Out of Reach
If the required score comes out above 100%, no possible final exam score can reach your target grade. The calculator flags this and shows the best overall grade achievable by scoring a perfect 100% on the final instead, so you know exactly where you’d realistically land.
Why the Final’s Weight Matters So Much
A final worth 10% of your grade has far less power to move your overall score than one worth 40%. The same current grade and target grade can require a very different final exam score depending purely on how heavily the final is weighted – always check your syllabus for the exact figure rather than guessing.
The Best-Case and Worst-Case Scenarios
Alongside the score you need, the calculator also shows your overall grade if you ace the final (100%) and if you skip it entirely (0%). These two numbers frame the full realistic range of outcomes before you’ve even sat the exam.
