Calculate your grade point average. This free GPA calculator turns your letter grades and credit hours into a weighted GPA on the standard 4.0 scale, with total credits and grade points shown.
Enter each course’s letter grade and credit hours. GPA is the credit-weighted average of grade points on a standard 4.0 scale (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, and so on, with +/- steps).
GPA = total grade points / total credits, where each course contributes its grade-point value times its credit hours. Courses with more credits influence the GPA more.
What This GPA Calculator Does
Add each course with its letter grade and credit hours, and this calculator works out your overall GPA on the standard 4.0 scale, weighted by credits rather than simply averaged across courses.
The Standard 4.0 Grading Scale
A+ and A both equal 4.0, A- equals 3.7, B+ equals 3.3, B equals 3.0, and so on down to F at 0.0, with +/- increments of 0.3-0.4 throughout. This scale is widely used across US high schools and universities, though some institutions use slight variations.
How GPA Is Calculated
GPA = Total Grade Points / Total Credits, where each course’s grade points equal its letter grade’s point value multiplied by its credit hours.
For example, an A- (3.7) in a 4-credit course, a B+ (3.3) in a 3-credit course, and an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course produces 36.7 total grade points across 10 total credits, for a GPA of 3.67.
Why Credit Hours Change the Result
A course worth more credits has proportionally more influence on your GPA than a course worth fewer credits, even with an identical letter grade. This is why GPA can differ from a simple unweighted average of your letter grades.
Why Some Institutions Use Different Scales
While the 4.0 scale is the most common in the US, some schools use a 5.0 scale for weighted honors or AP courses, and international institutions often use entirely different systems. Check with your specific school if you’re unsure which scale officially applies to you.
Unweighted vs Weighted GPA
An unweighted GPA treats every course the same regardless of difficulty, capping out at 4.0. A weighted GPA gives extra points for honors, AP, or IB courses, sometimes allowing a GPA above 4.0. This calculator uses the unweighted 4.0 scale; check with your school if you need a weighted figure that accounts for course difficulty as well as credit hours.
